Klarna's AI assistant and human support

This sample shows how a weekly Human Check issue will separate a company claim from the record, the response and the unanswered questions.

The claim

Klarna valued the work of its AI assistant at more than 700 full-time agents and reported $39 million in 2024 cost savings.

The human consequence

Klarna reported approximately 4,352 full-time employees at end-2023, 3,422 at end-2024, and 2,831 at end-2025. Its filing links that company-wide reduction to a strategy using AI; these totals are not a count of AI layoffs. Its CEO later said cost cutting had reduced service quality and said the company would hire human support agents again through a remote gig-style model.

The company response

Klarna says customers could still choose a human agent and rejects the idea that its hiring pivot was a retreat from AI.

What remains open

Revenue grew 24.8%, from $2.811bn in 2024 to $3.509bn in 2025. The record does not establish how many people were rehired, whether former staff got those roles, how much of the company-wide headcount decline AI caused, or whether AI drove the revenue growth. The pilot reportedly began with two agents.

A practical step

For people whose work is changing, record what is confirmed about your role, hours and pay. Ask your employer what training, transfers or job-search support it will provide.
