Klarna said AI did the work of 700 agents. Then it started hiring humans again.
What the company claimed, what its own filings show, what its CEO said next — and what none of it proves.
In its 2024 figures, Klarna valued the work of its AI assistant at more than 700 full-time agents and reported $39 million in savings. Customers, it said, could still choose a human.
Full-time staff fell from about 4,352 at the end of 2023 to 3,422 at the end of 2024 and 2,831 at the end of 2025. Its filing links the company-wide reduction to a strategy using AI. These totals are not a count of AI layoffs.
In May 2025 the chief executive said cost cutting had reduced quality, that cost had become too dominant a factor, and that Klarna would hire human support agents again.
Klarna rejects the idea that this is a retreat from AI. We print that response alongside the workforce figures and the limits of what they prove.
