What happened
Announced at the November 2025 Capital Markets Day and reconfirmed with February 2026 results, which showed 1,500 FTE already removed in 2025. The plan combines end-to-end process digitisation, legacy-system removal, wider use of APIs, and embedded AI. Reporting indicates most of the remaining reduction is expected through natural attrition.
Attribution and company response
Revenue held, staff cut. The published revenue comparison held or grew — €8.716bn operating income in FY2025, down 2.0%. This clears the tracker’s revenue screen; it does not prove AI substitution, completed departures or the absence of financial pressure.

Sources & limits
Revenue is not profit. These figures may cover different periods and do not isolate the effects of AI. Median pay includes more than salary and can change with workforce composition; it does not track raises for the same employees.
The AI-attributable share is not stated — the bank presents AI alongside broader system simplification. Much of the mechanism appears to be attrition rather than redundancy notices, which is a materially different thing from a layoff.
Allocation evidence: One completed program, not total annual payouts. Predates the November strategy announcement. The planned reduction is 5,200 FTE by 2028, with half expected through attrition. Checked 22 September 2026. Allocation source ↗
Workforce and outcome context
Year-end 2025 headcount was 24,632, versus 23,299 in 2024. An acquisition changed the scope. Half of the proposed 5,200 FTE reduction is expected through attrition.
