Standard Chartered

More than 7,800 back-office roles to go by 2030, with the CEO describing lower-value human capital giving way to machines and AI.

What happened

Bill Winters announced the plan at a Hong Kong investor briefing on 19 May 2026, covering more than 15% of 52,271 corporate-function positions. Affected functions include risk management and regulatory compliance. After criticism he apologised for his choice of words and said the remarks were taken out of context — but he did not withdraw the workforce plan.

Attribution and company response

Revenue held, staff cut. The published revenue comparison held or grew — $20.9bn operating income in FY2025, up 6%. This clears the tracker’s revenue screen; it does not prove AI substitution, completed departures or the absence of financial pressure.

Bank operating income is the banking top line, not operating profit. Reported profit after tax. The data pack re-presents historical figures; cash distributions have not yet been extracted into a comparable quarterly series.

* Calculated by subtracting reported periods: usually cumulative total minus the previous cumulative total, or full year minus nine months for Q4. Monday.com Q1 is half year minus Q2. Click a value for its source; click * for the subtracted period. Some calculations use different filings and may be affected by restatements. Fiscal dates differ between companies; compare the same season a year earlier.

Worker pay remains annual in the compensation table. Missing quarterly pay or headcount is not interpolated. This is financial-history coverage, not a complete assessment of who benefits.

Sources & limits

Revenue is not profit. These figures may cover different periods and do not isolate the effects of AI. Median pay includes more than salary and can change with workforce composition; it does not track raises for the same employees.

What share of the 7,800-plus is attributable to AI rather than broader restructuring, or whether the losses come through redundancy or attrition. The 2030 figure is a plan, not a completed outcome.
